I am thinking of swapping my trusty 97 Citroen ZX for a 2 yr old X-Trail. Has any one had any problems other than noisy timing chain on early models which I believe there was a recall for? Any advice on fuel consumption, service costs, parts availability, general niggles and things to look out for would most welcome. Many thanks Zxman (or is it soon to be Xtrailman?)

I have an Almera with the 2.2Di engine which has now covered over 100k without any problems. The version of the engine as fitted to the Xtrail has been further refined and uprated. My friend has a Primera with the uprated engine (138bhp) and is extremely happy with it. Loads of power and flexibility. I would go ahead and buy the Xtrail any reports I have read are very positive about it. Fuel consumption in the Primera averages about 43.5 so I would say expect about 40 overall in the Xtrail.

Cheers Franhug, As I get about 42 to 48 mpg from the ZX then 40mpg form the x-trail wont dent the pocket to much. I believe these engines were once renaults and nissan tweaked them. I have finally found suitable X-trail and pick it up next week after 3 months of searching for the right deal. I'll keep a record of fuel consumption and advise.

sadly my 05 2.2 just written off. 150,000 miles no probs. consumption 37 (I use off road and tow so normal use might get higher but 39 unlikely). no timing chain rattle no turbo probs. Great car. better co2s now from the competition so wont replace with another - otherwise i would. Possible only thing to check is front brake wear and sticking calipers.
